Fall Semester 2018

EDTS 232: Professional Dimensions of Teaching I - This course taught me what it means to be a teacher and introduced me to lesson planning and the history of education. It allowed me to understand how far education has come and how fulfilling the teaching profession is.    

 

FREN 200: Beginner's French I - This course is an introductory French course that focuses on the fundamentals of the French language. This is an interesting and useful course as it taught me the basics of French in both spoken and written French. 

 

GNED 221: Aesthetic Experience and Ideas - This course focused on the ideals of beauty and what it means for something to be classified as beautiful or not. This course encouraged me to appreciate art and nature which I can bring into the classroom to guide students to look at art and nature from different view points. 

 

HIST 231: An Introduction to History: Canada Origins to 1967 - This Canadian History course centred on the origins of Canada and the major players in the road to Confederation. This course opened by eyes to the suffering endured by many peoples, included First Nations and the Chinese. This course will aid me in communicating the importance of the blemishes on Canadian History to my students. 

 

PHIL 201: Problem of Philosophy - This is an introductory philosophy course that discusses skepticism, perception, personal identity, free will and determinism, and God. This course encouraged me to question and inquire what it true, which will help me have similar thought provoking discussions with my students. 

Winter Semester 2019

EDTS 234: Professional Dimensions of Teaching II - This course furthered my understanding of what its is like to be a classroom teacher. We discussed topics such as, classroom management, assessment and teaching philosophies 

 

EDTS 321: Education Psychology of Teaching - This course outline developmental milestones for school aged children. It has helped me to understand what can be expected of students in terms of their cognitive, physical, emotional, and social abilities based on developmental research findings. 

 

NUTR 200: Introduction to Nutrition - This course outlines what a healthy diet is based on variety, moderation, balance, and adequacy. It has helped me to understand what it means to eat healthy, which I can pass on to my students in order to encourage them to have a healthy diet and an active life style.  

 

RELI 205: The Nature of Religion - This course focuses on how and why we accept religion. It has shown me that it is important to belief in what you choose, but to also inquire about why we accept our religious and non-religions beliefs. This course will help me to encourage my students to explore the reasoning behind why we hold value in our beliefs. 

 

SOCI 201: Introductory Sociology - This course outlines how society influences and shapes who we are through socializing agents such as our families and the media.  The knowledge I have gained from this course will help me to demonstrate socially construed stereotypes and how to look past them. 

Spring Semester 2019

ENGL 203: Reading and Writing about Literature II - This course focuses on reading and writing about literature after the 19th century. My professor chose titles that focused on mental disorders, which made the course both interesting and informative. From this course I learned that things may not always be as they seem, so it important to look beyond the surface and dig deeper into the lives of others (especially our students) to connect with them. 

 

ENGL 252: Introductory Composition - This course outlines how write and thinking critically at a university level. Not only did this course aid in formulating my future papers in my university carrier, it also allowed me to explore topics that I thought were interesting and important. These topics include, school uniforms and standardized testing. 

 

Fall Semester 2019

EDTS 325: Tools for Teaching and Learning in the Digital Classroom - This course focuses on different types of technology and how it impacts the classroom. The most beneficial aspect of this course is the technology tips and tricks I have learned that will allow me to use effective use technology and its vast number of programs.

 

GNED 210: Scientific and Mathematical Literacy for the Modern World - This course outlines different math and science topics, including but not limited to, logic, statistics, and alternative energy sources. This course has made me think more about the world we live in and how we can improve it. Also, this course employed collaborative learning during class time, which I both enjoyed and appreciated. I hope to also incorporate this style of teaching into my own classroom. 

 

KNES 281:  Introduction to Movement Actives of Children and Youth - This course focuses on the impact of physical activity on youth. In this course I have learned physical activity, both free play and structured play, is critical for student success. 

 

LING 201: Introduction to Linguistics I - This course outlines english phonetic sounds and how/why they sound the way they do. This course has been valuable to me as it has given me a better understanding of how to teach speech, which is useful for young children, those with speech impairments, and those learning English. 

Winter Semester 2020

EDTS 371: Language Development and Literacy in Schools - This course focuses on the importance of literacy within schools and different teaching methods to reach all students in their literacy journey. A practicum placement accompanied this course and I was able to work with a grade one class at Vincent Massey. I was able to collect many teaching resources that will aid me in my literary pursuits. 

ENGL 301: Survey of English Literature II - This course covers material from the Romantic period to present day, with a focus on historical and social contexts. In this course, we studied material that was intriguing and thought provoking. I have further developed my skills to consider multiple perspectives. I hope to share these perspectives with my students and further develop their critical thinking skills. 
 
GNED 230: Citizenship Without Borders - This course focused on important topics such as racism and discrimination. This course has helped me to challenge societal ideals, and it has furthered my ability to discuss controversial topics with confidence. This will help we to continue to bring these conversations into my classroom, in a respectful and effective way. 

MICO 191: Introduction to Microcomputers -  This course includes an overview of commercial business software packages, with a focus on making spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software. It has helped me to develop my technology skills. I will share me knowledge with my students to ensure that they too develop their technology skills and continue to develop their 21st century learner attributes. 
 

Fall Semester 2020

EDUC 3010: Practicum I - This course was inconjuction with my third year placement at the Medicine Hat Christian School. See my practicum experiences page for a more in depth look at my practicum experience. This course focused on the importance of planning, creating professional growth plans, and feedback from colleges. Through this course and my practicum I reaffirmed my passion for teaching and learned that feedback from others is essential to professional growth.  

EDUC 3103: Curriculum Instruction in Teaching English Language Arts - This course includes teaching methodologies, planing, and resources in relation to teaching ELA and literacy. This course has made me aware of many great teacher resources of what should be included in literacy lessons and units. Check out my teaching literacy tab for more specific examples of this. 

EDUC 3106: Curriculum Instruction in Teaching Science - This course includes teaching methodologies, planing, and resources in relation to teaching science. This course also had an inquiry focus, which allows students to take charge of their own learning. I hope to employ inquiry learning in my science classroom. 
 
EDUC 3018: Curriculum Instruction in Teaching Mathematics - This course includes teaching methodologies, planing, and resources in relation to teaching mathematics. This course has made my confidence in teaching math sky rocket! I hope to share my knowledge and math games with my students. 

EDUC 4351: Indigenous Perspectives in Education - This course includes teaching methodologies, planing, and resources in relation to teaching indigenous perspectives. This course was thought provoking and encourage self reflection. Important issues such as discrimination and stereotypes were discussed. I hope to bring these conversations into my classroom to better education my students on relevant issues that are apart of everyday life and Canadian history. 
 

Winter 2021

EDUC 2375: Effective Assessment - Measurement and Evaluation - This course includes teaching methodologies such as backwards design, that can be used to for effective assessment. This course demonstrate what and how students should be assess to best show their knowledge and abilities. 

EDUC 3101: Curriculum Instruction in Teaching Art - This course includes ideas surrounding art education, along with hands on experiences with multiple mediums are art. This course focused on the design thinking process, where the goal is to prototype creations to continue to refine projects. 
 
EDUC 3105: Curriculum Instruction in Teaching Physical Education - This course included methodologies in line with teaching physical education to enable students to develop lifelong skills. This course demonstrated to me that physical education encompasses physical health, mental health, and spiritual health. 

ENGL 3308: The Novel From 1800 to Now - This course includes the discussion of many social issues such as racism, sexism and the influence of technology. This course has allowed me to better my knowledge on social issues that will allow me to have age appropriate and meaningful conversations with my students on similar topics. 

ENGL 3382: Textualities/Sexualities - This course includes the discussion of many ideas associated with gender and its fluidity. This course has bettered my knowledge on different gender identities, which will allow me to have helpful and meaningful conversations with my students on topics they may be interested about or struggling in. 

Fall Semester 2021

EDUC 4107: Curriculum Instruction in Teaching Social Studies - This course includes teaching methodologies, planing, and resources in relation to teaching social studies. My biggest takeaway form this course is that social studies should be rooted in critical thinking, where students are given opportunities to explore and discover information to make make informed decisions. 

EDUC 4325: The Impact of Social Issues in Education and Schooling - This course explored a multitude of social issues that students face on a daily basis. A main component of this course was the intercultural development inventory, where we explored our own cultural bias' and blindspots. I learned that it is important to have age appropriate conversations with our students about sensitive topics such as racism to develop a greater appreciation and celebration of all cultures. 
 
EDUC 4361: Exceptional Students, Special Needs, and Inclusive Schooling - This course includes teaching methodologies, planing, and resources in relation to teaching students who require individual supports. I have learned that all students need some level of differentiation, and changes made with specific students in mind often benefits the entire class (i.e. giving ample think time after asking a question, or using visuals to support verbal and written instruction). 

ENGL 3309: Theatre & Performance From 1900 to Now - This course covers topics such as discrimination, the Sixties Scoop, and social change. This course demonstrated to me the power of plays and performances have by illustrating how society impacts people and their ideas. 

PHIL 2208: Bioethics - This course includes topics such as abortion, stem cell research, vaccinations, futile treatment, and assisted death. Studying controversial topics brought forward ideas and perspectives I had not though of. This course demonstrated to me that their are always multiple perspectives to an argument, and that these types of arguments do not have a correct answer.

 

Winter Semester 2022

EDUC 4104: Curriculum Instruction in Music - This course includes teaching methodologies, planing, and resources in relation to teaching music. For this course I learned curwen hand signals, ukulele, and performed a musical. This course demonstrated the value of music education and the how it benefits students.
