Fostering Effective Relationships
Fostering effective relationships is important because it ensures that all students feel valued in the classroom. When students feel valued they are more likely to engage in learning and contribute positively to the classroom environment. Strong and positive relationships enrich learning as the creation of a powerful bond results in trust between teacher and student. Fostering relationships with parents, colleges and community members is equally important as it allows teachers to connect with different aspects of student life to keep learning fun and purposeful.
In my first practicum at River Heights, my mentor teacher recalled an event where I welcomed a student who came late. It can be easy to scold these students, but it is more effective to be excited and friendly as they enter the classroom to reinforce that the student and valued and deserves a place in the classroom.
"Recently, when a student arrived late, Ashley was the first one to welcome her with; "Lily we are all so happy to see you." Lily was beaming and I was so impressed! Ashley recognizes which students need that little extra love and care. She is so good at this, but truly all students feel loved and accepted by her."

In my third year practicum, I enjoyed building relationships with my grade one and two students. This age group always have silly stories and creative ideas! Some of my favourite times with these students was in the mornings as they were taking off their winter gear and getting ready for the day. Another great time to connect with students is during work time, where I would mill around the room and help students with the concept we were working on.
In this photo I am helping three students decipher between what is naturally made and what is manufactured. At The Christian School we used the terms God made (naturally made), and man made (manufactured).

At Ecole St.John Paul II (4th year/11 week practicum) I made some lasting relationships with my colleagues, Susan Flanagan and Jen Grad. They have assessed my teaching abilities and gave impactful feedback. This communication has been vital to my success, thus I will continue to seek out feedback from my future colleagues. During spirit week, the three of us dressed up as our favourite book character, Captain Underpants.
