Demonstrating a Professional Body of Knowledge

It is critical for teachers to keep learning experiences relative to student development. It is our job to aid students to be creative and innovative to active their goals. Foundational information will allow students to take what they know and build their own ideas. When teachers are knowledgeable about the curriculum and researched based teaching styles, they will teach in a way that motivates and encourages to students to be successful and have fun.
Here is a lesson I taught for a grade four class at Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Center. It was the very first official lesson I taught and students engagement was high. My lesson outlined different types of bullying and strategies students can use to resolve bullying. I have also included the worksheet I had the students complete after the I had taught the lesson to assess what they had learned.

Here is a portfolio I created for KNES 281. It is a compilation of different gym/classroom games that can be used to achieve a variety goals, like developmenting fundamental movement skills, peer cooperation, and encourage students to get to know each other. Each game includes a: description, equipment, modifications, curricular evaluation, and personal evaluation. These games are useful for brain breaks, gym class, and beginning of the year ice breakers.

There is a large focus in literacy in grade one, so it is imperative that we keep instruction fun and applicable. My focus was on word families, such as er, ar, and or. I did multiple activities with these word families to reach all learners.  Some of the students favourite activities included, scavenger hunts, silly sentences, nonsense words and bingo.
For our scavenger hunts, I would hide different pictures of our words, like horse, sport and fort. The students were challenged with the task to find the pictures and write the word. Then, as a class we would find all the pictures together and say what they were.
The students loved writing  silly sentences. This activity students were required to make a sentence using at least one word from our word family. I enjoyed reading and laughing with students during this activity.
Nonsense words help to students to connect with the concept of word families and allow them to be creative. This is a fun and laughter filled activity, as students enjoyed sharing their nonsense words with their classmates and myself.
For our bingo activity, students would draw and label as many words that fit into our word family. We did this activity later in the week, so students already had experienced many or words. Then, I would choose students to say one of their words to the class. If another student had the same word, they would circle it.  Students would get a bingo if they circled five words.
In grade 5 social, we ordered a WWII box that contained all kinds of artifacts from WWII. The students throughly enjoyed exploring the different artifacts, and chose their favourite one to delve further into. This engaging and hands on activity demonstrated to students Canada's contributions to WWII and the experience soldiers (and their families) faced.

These gentlemen are playing a Canadian board game, that clearly supports the war effort. Many students chose this item as their most interesting because they enjoyed getting a chance to play the game.
